LUNAR NEW YEAR OF THE DOG

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival 春節, is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese. The first day of New Year will fall on the new moon – February 16, initiating the year of the DOG. The night before New Year, families will gather to have a Reunion Dinner 團年飯. Legend has it that the Beast ‘Nien’ 年 would appear at the end of the year attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the Beast away hence we have firework celebrations. Red envelopes 紅包 are traditionally given out, new clothes are worn and festive decorations are put up everywhere. People greet each other saying: Gong Xi Fa Cai 恭喜發財 (wish you wealth and prosperity), Shen Ti Jian Kang 身體健康 (good health), and all sorts of happy and positive greetings. It is a time of celebration and reunion of families and friends.
The DOG is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. People born in 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 and 2018 are all DOGS. Famous Dogs include: Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa, Elvis Presley, Madonna etc.
Southside Mandarin wishes you in advance a Happy and Prosperous Year of the Dog!

NYSENSORY PLAY FOR CHILDREN

From birth to early childhood, children use their senses to explore and try to make sense of the world around them. They do this by touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, moving and hearing. Providing opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world through ‘sensory play’ is crucialto brain development – it helps to build nerve connections in the brain’s pathways. This leads to a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks and supports cognitive growth, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction and problem solving skills.
Our daily <2 year old CLASS + PLAY sessions allow babies and toddlers to experience different types of sensory activities through music, art, toys, physical movements and more.

GUANGZHOU EXCHANGE

Our team recently visited a local GZ Kindergarten and Learning Centre. Our Curriculum Development Teacher had a trial lesson with the GZ children, showing them an innovative and fun way to create their first ever Chinese essay, using Southside Mandarin’s own draw-and-write approach targeted at young students. It was certainly a great learning experience as we discovered similar issues faced by children in both HK and China in terms of proficiency expectations, school limitations, parents’ support and teaching pedagogies. The children we met were all bright, active, polite and very cute! It was very rewarding and we look forward to more exchanges with our GZ partners!

NYChinese New Year Holidays

The Centre will be closed on the following days:
Feb 16 Friday 年初一
Feb 17 Saturday 年初二
Feb 19 Monday 年初三
